1stUUPB’s Second Saturday Book
Group will be meeting in the Sanctuary at 10am on Saturday, December 10, to
discuss Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. An American classic first published in 1937, this
novel has inspired writers and readers for close to 70 years. Hurston brings us the story of Janie
Crawford, a Southern Black woman in the 1930s, showing her journeys from a
free-spirited girl to a woman of independence and substance. Set in central and southern Florida in the
early 20th century, the novel was initially poorly received for its rejection
of “racial uplift literary prescriptions.” Today, it has come to be regarded as
a seminal work in both African-American
literature and women's literature.
