Our 1stUUPB  Second Saturday Book Group meets on Saturday, February 10, from 10-12:15
or so in the Sanctuary to discuss Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland.

Our group’s theme for this year is Family —  the Ties that Bind, and Sometimes Unravel.
Within Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland we meet four generations of the Mitra family as they
move between Calcutta/Kolkata, India, and Rhode Island, USA.  We see what binds them
together — and also makes them unravel.  Does this happen in most families? Are there
lowlands in your family that impact multiple generations? We see this family deal with
challenges of immigration, varying cultural conventions, political and religious conflicts.

Nominations: Booker Prize, National Book Award for Fiction, Goodreads Choice Awards Best
Fiction. In 2000 Jhumpa Lahiri won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for Interpreter of Maladies.

Feel free to join us—whether you’re a member or not, whether you've finished the book
or not. We like to --“Read so as to know the world.”
