Hymn #188 Come, Come, Whoever You Are

Introduction

Prelude: Singing Bowl meditation

Welcome/ Announcements

Opening Words

Lighting the Chalice Flame (in unison):
In these difficult times, let us look first to the response of love. In the midst of challenge, may our chalice flame bear witness to the inherent worth and dignity of every human being. In the midst of uncertainty, may our chalice be a beacon of encouragement, that our values may guide our choices. Let us look first to the response of love.

*Hymn #360: Here We Have Gathered

Reading: The Hungry Spirit by Charles Handy

Quiet Time/Meditation/ Prayers

Offertory: Breath In, Breath Out, Move On, by Jimmy Buffett

Affirmation (in unison) Love is the spirit of this congregation and service is its law. This is our great covenant: to dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love and to help one another.

Sermon:  Spiritual Capitalism  Dr. Richard Hattwick

*Hymn# 128: For All That Is Our Life

Extinguishing the Chalice Flame (in unison) We extinguish this flame, but not the light of truth, the warmth of community, or the fire of commitment. These we carry in our hearts until we are together again.

Thinking – and Living – Outside the Bubble
with the Rev. Carlton Elliott Smith

Some of us have privilege due to our skin color. We move through life in a veritable “bubble“ that buffers us from the scars that others suffer on a daily basis. This “bubble“ feels like protection, yet it isolates us from deeper understanding and heartfelt relationships.
Join this dynamic session as we explore how to live “Outside the Bubble.“

Last month at the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, VA, Rev. Smith stood for justice, linked arm in arm with Prof. Cornell West, UUA President Rev. Susan Frederick-Gray and several other UU ministers, staff and parishioners. The Rev. Carlton Elliott Smith is one of nine members of the Congregational Life Staff serving the UUA‘s Southern Region.
