Adult Literacy Center Seeks Tutors

1stUUPB grant recipient DePorres Place Adult Literacy Center, conveniently located at 1016 Dixie Highway, 2nd floor, West Palm Beach FL 33401 is seeking volunteer tutors.
The usual meeting time is twice a week for 1 1/2 hours but I meet with my Haitian man for 2 hours on Monday afternoons, when it fits into my schedule.  With snowbirds leaving, the Literacy Center is seeking new volunteers.

The setting is quite ideal with individual rooms for a tutor and student/s.  There is abundant and safe parking directly across the street from the Center.  The director Judy Ireland and associate director Linda Kramer are lovely people and effective leaders.  Both Marilynn Thomas and I have been recent volunteers there.  If you have questions, I'm happy to answer them.

LaRose-- Second Saturday Book Group’s Last of the Season

In our last meeting of the 2016-2017 season, our Second Saturday Book Group will discuss Louise Erdrich’s novel LaRose on Saturday, April 8, 10-12+ in the Sanctuary.  The plot of this novel wraps around the lives and families of two five-year-old boys, best friends who live near the boundaries of a Native American Ojibwa reservation in North Dakota.

This year, honoring the centennial of the Pulitzer Prizes, we added to the Pulitzer fiction winners we have read in recent years by reading Marjorie Rawlings's The Yearling - 1939; James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific - 1948; and Viet Nguyen's The Sympathizer - 2016; along with 1991 finalist, Tim O’Brien's The Things They Carried. The Pulitzer Prizes for Fiction are given for Distinguished fiction published in book form during the year by an American author, preferably dealing with American life.

At our meeting we'll reflect on this criteria and these Pulitzer winners we’ve read, and consider how LaRose -- published to high reviews in May 2016 -- compares with these.  It already has been awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award in Fiction and is a finalist for the 2017 PEN Faulkner Award.  All of the 2017 Pulitzer winners and the finalists will be announced on Monday, April 10— just two days after we meet. Let’s see how we’d rate LaRose next week. Author Louise Erdrich is a notable Native American author, whose Plague of Doves was a Pulitzer finalist in 2009.  You’re welcome to join us!

Selections for the 2017-2018 season will be announced in late summer.  Contact Dorie Maxwell for further information at doriemaxwell@mac.com or call 561-302-4204.

Opening Words

Lighting the Chalice Flame (in unison):
In this small flame dwell: the beacon light of lanterns guiding travelers home;
the warmth of hearth fires tended through the generations; the transforming energy of furnaces and the power and life of our sun. May these blessings -- warmth and light and life-giving energy -- be kindled in each of us.

*Hymn: # 21 For the Beauty of the Earth

Candles of Joy and Sorrow and Meditation

Reading

Offertory:  The Fools Who Dream by Hurwitz

Affirmation (in unison) Love is the spirit of this congregation and service is its law. This is our great covenant: to dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love and to help one another.

*Hymn: # 123 Spirit of Life

Sermon:    I Pity the Fool
                     Rev. CJ McGregor

*Hymn: # 121 We’ll Build a Land

Extinguishing the Chalice Flame (in unison) We extinguish this flame, but not the light of truth, the warmth of community, or the fire of commitment. These we carry in our hearts until we are together again.
