Second Saturday Book Group, March 10

1stUUPB’s Second Saturday Book Group --
Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy Search for Truth and Meaning

On Saturday, March 10, from 10:00-12:15 or so, 1stUUPB’s Second Saturday Book Group will meet in the Sanctuary to discuss Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice, written over 200 years ago and still loved and respected. Newcomers are always welcome.

In a timing coincidence, last Sunday Rev Dan preached about our Fourth UU Principle: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.  Be sure to read carefully P&P’s opening sentence:  "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”  This is one of the most famous openings in literature.  It immediately establishes the main subject — marriage — and the tone — social satire.  We could discuss this treasure for days, but we’ll focus on why it still resonates today. 

Our theme this year is “Family — the Ties that Bind, and Sometimes Unravel.”  We’ll see how Pride and Prejudice's Bennett family of the landed gentry class in England in the late 1700s compares with families we’ve already met this year in Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward, Moonglow by Michael Chabon, Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, and The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri.  

On April 14 our closing discussion of the season will be on Adam Haslett's  Imagine Me Gone, in which we’ll find that mental illness can be a family affair.  Check it out!

The collection for EMA on Feb. 18 totaled: $664.02. Thanks to all for your generosity.

A Message from Anand Perala

"I have been volunteering with a local group called Friends of Broward Detainees. They visit people who are in immigrant detention who do not have families here. Almost all of them are asylum seekers, many from African countries. We visit them once every two weeks to spend some time and provide a human connection to the outside world. We do not provide legal advice, although we can try to help connect them with lawyers who might be willing to take their case.

Most speak English, but there are several French speakers, and only one volunteer so far that speaks French. Spanish speakers are not really required for this program, since there are already Spanish language support networks in the area."

Matching Funds Still Available

YOU CAN STILL SECURE DOLLARS FOR OUR CONGREGATION

Now is the time to make your planned gift to the Unitarian Universalists. If you have been thinking about adding 1stUUPB or any other UU operation to your Will, Living Trust, Brokerage Account, or Retirement Assets (IRA, 401K, 403B) there is now a 10% bonus gift to our Congregation (or other UU operation if designated). We hope you will be part of this unprecedented opportunity. We can do something very positive to strengthen the institutions that amplify the values of our shared faith. This gift can be used by the receiving organization as they decide.

If 1stUUPB is the recipient, our Endowment Committee is suggesting designating the money for Capital Expenditures. There is an application and a list of common questions and answers for the 10% matching money that you can get from members of the Endowment Committee: Betty Richards, Coleen Conway, Kathe Bannigan, Dick Hattwick, or Bob Shipley. We could also help answer any questions you may have. The application and common questions and answers are also available in the 1stUUPB office, or can be downloaded from www.wakenowourvision.org.

In your planned giving statement you will need our tax ID number -- it is 59-6162395.

In addition to the application the UUA asks for a copy of the relevant pages of your will, trust, or beneficiary designation forms.

This campaign continues thru June 30, 2020. However, the generous contributing congregation, UU Shelter Rock, set a limit on the gifts of matching money at $5 million dollars. $2 million has already been allocated. Because the matching money could be expended before June, 2020, the earlier you act the better.

There is a $10,000 upper limit to the matching money. Shelter Rock will match your planned gifts of up to $100,000 with a match of up to $10,000. Of course, your planned gift may be more or less than the $100,000. Another important aspect of this 10% match is that if you have already designated a UU entity as a beneficiary and they have not been notified of this designation, that planned gift would also qualify for the 10% match with an application and supporting detail. Although we would like to know of a planned gift, if you do not wish to announce your planned gift to the receiving UU entity, you can qualify the receiving organization for the matching money confidentially with Laura Randall, Legacy Campaign Director, at (617) 948-6511, or lrandall@uua.org.

Annual EMA Collection on Sunday

The collection this Sunday is our annual dedicated collection for EMA -- Emergency Medical Assistance, which assists women in need of legal, safe abortions:

Emergency Medical Assistance, Inc. (EMA) is an independent nonprofit organization serving Palm Beach County and surrounding areas in South East Florida. EMA improves lives by helping to provide funding for abortions for women and girls who are faced with an unintended or problem pregnancy which they cannot afford to terminate. The majority of women and girls that we help are single, impoverished, unemployed or underemployed, mothers with one or more children. EMA preserves clients’ privacy and dignity while ensuring high quality and safe medical care when they face this difficult situation.

PEACE 1stUUPB Network Meeting, Feb 28

The PEACE (People Engaged in Active Community Efforts) 1stUUPB Network will hold a meeting at 7pm on February 28 in the Channing Room. At the meeting we will choose who to invite to the Nehemiah Action Assembly on April 16. We need more network members. Apply for Harriette Glasner Scholarship

The scholarship board is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the Harriette Glasner Justice Scholarship awarded each year to applicants who have demonstrated commitment to social justice in their schools and neighborhoods.  Because each year we have more applicants competing for the scholarship and have only a total of $10,000 to award, we will not be able to consider any application that is not complete.  All applications must be received by March 15, 2018.

Mountain Matters 2018

This issue will offer reflections on how things went at The Mountain in 2017, and update you on what great things are coming up in 2018. 

More guests welcomed in 2017
We are hosting more people at The Mountain each year, welcoming 3,157 adults and youth in 2017, a 4% increase over the past four years. This represents just over 11,000 onsite person nights! Guest evaluations are also showing favorable responses to our food and dining experience. Responses indicate 90% of guests rate our food, accommodation of dietary needs, and overall dining experience at 7 or higher, out of a high rating of 10. Kudos to Matt Wright and the Kitchen Team!

Message from the Executive Director
Speaking with guests during our Thanksgiving celebration I jokingly said that 2017 was the year of the windows. We started the year by replacing the windows in the Great Room and ended the year replacing the windows in the Dining Hall.  Bookends to an amazing year at The Mountain.

For five years, I continue to feel humbled and blessed by the love and generosity of our guests, donors and stakeholders. For example, in August we hosted the Total Solar Eclipse retreat, a program that was a year in the making. We had three beautiful cloudless days filled with wonderful speakers and activities. Then, on the morning of the big total eclipse day, a cloud appears on the horizon. As the time of Totality drew near the clouds thickened. We did not see the eclipse the way I pictured. I felt glum, wanting to hide my head like an ostrich. But something beautiful happened; the power of people and the magic of the Mountain drew me to speak with so many loving, understanding folks who were so happy to just be a part of our program. They lifted my spirit and strengthened my soul. Thank You!

I see this time and time again at this special place. I watched it happen with our campers all last summer. I see it with our longtime friends who haven’t been able to visit The Mountain for years. And, I see the amazing transformation first timers experience when they hadn’t known that their heart needed a shot of affection until they discovered it here.

All this is why The Mountain exists.

You are why The Mountain has been so successful and why 2017 was such an amazing year.  I said in my opening that we replaced windows, but did so much more. With your support we repaired Sally’s Deck at the Lodge, added ground lights around the roadways at the top, replaced the Dining Hall chairs, and so much more. Our programs continued to grow. We hosting over 3,100 guests, setting recent attendance records for Easter Work Weekend, Music week, Thanksgiving, and MountainCamp. All in all, this is a magnificent community to be a part of!

Thank you for everything you contribute: your time, talent, and treasure. I love you all and look forward to seeing you here in 2018.

Many Hands Peace Farm
It may be winter on the Many Hands Peace Farm, but there is progress being made in establishing the plantings for the new Food Forest and Mushroom Lab.

We now have over 200 trees, shrubs, and vines overwintering on our hillside nursery. We continuously add leaf mulch around the plants. The plants have so far successfully weathered zero degree temperatures and a couple of large snowfalls..

Along the furrows, we placed several burlap sacks full of wood chips and mushroom spawn. These bags are preventing erosion and helping us propagate Tiger Sawgill (Lentinus Tigrinus) and Turkeytail (Trametes Versicolor) mushrooms.

The meadow is currently filled with Goldenrod stalks and their galls. The larva inside of the galls have remarkable adaptations that allow them to survive freezing conditions. They also serve as food for Downy Woodpeckers and parasitic wasps. ​It may be winter on the Many Hands Peace Farm, but there is progress being made in establishing the plantings for the new Food Forest and Mushroom Lab.
